Safety
The issue of safety when in the Workshop and working with tools, is very important to us at WWC. In the past we have had a very good safety record, which has been upheld by the common-sense of members, and the concern by all members to have a safe and enjoyable environment to work in.
For that reason the committee have developed a set of Safety rules and guidelines that must be adhered when operating the relevant machinery in the WWC Workshop. These rules will be enforced where possible by the member on duty, but should also be noted by all members that they should speak-up about any unsafe practices that they see occurring in the workshop.
Some important rules to note are:
This is a "clean-as-you-go" workshop which means that when you have completed any operation on a machine you immediately dust off and sweep up any sawdust and shavings and remove any jig you have used with the machine.
Your personal safety is your own responsibility. Do not use a machine with which you are unfamiliar until you have had instruction in its use. Club Insurance covers third parties - personal accident insurance is your responsibility.
You should be aware that in addition to potential hazards in the use of woodworking equipment there are two further health hazards, noise and dust. We recommend that you use appropriate protective equipment against these. Although the club has sawdust and dust extraction equipment in service this is by no means fully effective. Disregarding this warning is your responsibility!
Prohibited Materials:
- Machining of treated pine is not permitted in this workshop
- Machining of painted salvage is not permitted on the surface planer (buzzer) or thicknesser.
- Salvaged fencing and flooring which may contain silica, grit or nails are not permitted.
- MDF or chipboard scrap must not be placed in the off cuts bin -this is for clean burnable material only.
- Partly completed projects can be stored in the outside storage shed when not being worked on for a limited time only.
- Unused salvage material from the shed must be returned there at dosing time. Every effort must be made to keep fuel residues in the workshop at a minimum.
Borrowing is limited to damps only and is confined to overnight or between sessions. These must be entered in the Loan Book by the entrance.
SMOKING IS NOT PERMITTED IN THE WORKSHOP.
Club members jointly own the equipment - if you misuse and damage equipment you inflict this not only on your share but everyone else's. Be a responsible user!
Below is a copy of the current (16/11/2004) Safety Rules that have been circulated to all club members:
You may notice some common themes in all of these sections:
- Clean up after your job is done.
- Any damage should be reported to the member on duty
- Members causing damage to machines or using unsafe workpractices, will be stopped by the member on duty.
Table Saw
Have you operated this machine before ??? If not, or you are not sure how to, see the member on duty.
Do not machine treated pine, or wood with paint / sand / soil on it.
Do not machine wood from which all nails have not been removed. ( USE METAL-DETECTOR )
Make sure riving knife (splitter) and blade cover are in place.
Adjust and lock fence for correct cut.
Make sure push stick is to hand.
Attach feather boards where needed
Place out feed roller in place if cutting long pieces.
Wear ear and eye protection!
Switch on extractor.
Switch on and feed work through machine without forcing it.
Keep fingers clear of blade - use push stick to push work piece past blade.
If ripping long or bulky work pieces ask for assistance.
When cross-cutting make sure rip fence is well clear of end of work-piece.
Use jigs and appliances supplied.
When in doubt ask for assistance.
Stand to one side whilst operating machine
When finished, turn off machine and remove work piece when blade has stopped.
If you hear the machine slowing down, immediately reduce the cut.
DO NOT OVERHEAT THE MOTOR !!!
If in doubt ask the Member on duty.
When finished, turn extractor "OFF".
Clean up after your job is done.
Any damage should be reported to the member on duty.
Members causing damage to machines or using unsafe workpractices, will be stopped by the member on duty.
Docking Saw
Have you operated this machine before ??? If not, or you are not sure, see the member on duty.
Do not machine treated pine or wood with paint / sand / soil on it.
Do not machine wood from which all nails have not been removed. (USE METAL-DETECTOR )
Check:
- depth of cut.
- depth gauge is locked.
- correct blade angle eg. 90 degrees radially & 90 degrees vertically (90x90)
- that spring-loaded blade guard is in place and moving freely.
- that table is locked.
- that work piece is hard back to fence.
Make test cut and check angle.
Cut only one piece at a time.
Allow blade to STOP before lifting and removing work piece.
Do not allow saw dust to build up in front of fence.
If angle cutting, return saw to 90 X 90 when finished.
Check that fence is secured and square with table.
Wear earprotection!
Clean up after your job is done.
Any damage should be reported to the member on duty
Members causing damage to machines or using unsafe workpractices, will be stopped by the member on duty.
Bandsaw
Have you operated this machine before ??? If not, or you are not sure, see the member on duty.
Do not machine treated pine or wood with paint / sand / soil on it.
Do not machine wood from which all nails have not been removed. (USE METAL-DETECTOR )
Check that fence is secured and square with table.
Move guide down, only exposing enough of the blade to cut the wood.
Switch on extractor.
Switch on bandsaw.
Keep fingers (including thumb) on either side of the blade.
Use push stick whenever possible.
Pay high attention when cutting through.
Keep wood hard against fence when squaring face edge. Use jigs.
Too much pressure will twist the blade the result is:
- a uneven cut.
- the blade may jam or come off the wheels.
- in the worst case it will snap and cause serious injury.
Under no circumstances cut rods or logs with a rolling action ... They should be kept upright.
When finished, turn bandsaw and extractor "OFF".
Clean up after your job is done.
Any damage should be reported to the member on duty
Members causing damage to machines or using unsafe workpractices, will be stopped by the member on duty.
Drillpress
Have you operated this machine before ??? If not, or you are not sure, see the member on duty.
Do not drill painted, treated or wood with sand /soil on it.
Do not machine wood from which all nails have not been removed. (USE METAL-DETECTOR)
Wear safety glasses & ear protection!
Wear tight clothing and tie long hair back.
Workpiece must be securely held.
Use clamp(s) if workpiece is small.
Select right speed : small drill = fast, large drill = slow.
Use a piece of scrap wood underneath.
If drilling deep holes, lift the drill bit several times to free the flutes from dust and chips.
Slow down feed before drilling through.
If you hear the machine slowing down,
immediately reduce the pressure on the handlever.
DO NOT OVERHEAT THE MOTOR !!!
DO NOT OVERHEAT THE DRILL !!!
Smoke is a sign of great heat,
stop drilling immediately,
the drill may be blunt or wrong speed is selected.
If in doubt ask member on duty.

Do not machine treated pine or wood with paint / sand / soil on it.
Do not machine wood from which all nails have not been removed. (USE METAL-DETECTOR)
Switch on extractor.
Switch on Sander.
Too much pressure will slow down the machine and therefore the progress on your job.
Putting fingers on the belt is very painful and you may not be able to finish your job.
Use rubber block to clean clogged belt up.
When finished turn beltsander and extractor "OFF" .
Clean up after your job is done.
